“I don’t want to go to school today.” Rosalie stomped her foot.

I lifted my coffee mug up to my mouth to hide my smile. It was nice to see her acting a little bratty. It meant she was comfortable. For the few months she’d been here, she’d been timid and almost subservient, as if she were afraid we would send her back to Guatemala to live with a distant relative. Right now, the only relative she knew was some distant aunt.

I’d told her a few times that she could disagree with us, get angry with us, even stomp her feet and yell, and we still would want her around. Finally, it seemed she believed me.

We still had an hour until we had to leave for school. James had left earlier. He’d barely said goodbye to me. I was too hurt by the way he acted the night before to say much either.

I crouched down before Rosalie. “You don’t want to go to school? Why not?”

My voice was even.

“Courtney said I talk funny.”

“She did, huh?”

Rosalie crossed her arms across her chest and nodded, her lips pressed together.

“Did she say it mean, or did she just say it.”

Rosalie’s forehead scrunched up. “Just said it.”

“Do you think she was trying to be mean?”

Again she paused, looking off in the distance, remembering. “I don’t know.”

“Do you think it’s because you have an accent, or was it because of something you’d said, some word you used?”

“Accent. My r’s sound different than when the teacher says it.”

“Did it hurt your feelings that she said that to you?”

She pressed her lips even tighter together and nodded.

“I’m sorry.” I pulled her in a hug. “I understand that it’s hard to be new to a school and to a country and to a language. You want to fit in and be like everyone else, but here’s the thing, you’re so wonderful because you aren’t like everyone else. That’s one of the parts of you I love—that tiny, tiny accent you have. It makes what you say sound so beautiful to me.”

She gave me a look, unconvinced.

“What do you think Courtney would say if you told her saying that hurt your feelings?”

Rosalie shrugged.

“Do you think it would help?”

Again, the slight lift of her shoulders.

“Wanna try and see what she says? It’s important to tell people how you feel if they say something you don’t agree with. Okay?”

“Okay.”

“Should we get ready for school?”

“Okay.”
